This terrific place is the perfect North America escape if you're looking for something straight out from a terror movie. It's near the Xochimilco canals (28 km south from Mexico city).
The story tells us that, in 1951, three children played in an island near to the Teshuilo lake, between Xochimilco and Mexico City, when one of the girls drowned. Her soul never rested and her spirit tormented a man called Julián Santana Barrera, who lived near the kennels where she died. This man felt haunted and only find one way to push bach her spirit: he hanged dolls everywhere in the woods, old, abandoned, lost dolls, to decorate the trees. The first dolls he put there himself, but, with the passage of the years, other habitants of the island were curious by this tale and brought him even more dolls, hoping that he could live in peace then. According to Julián, this helped a lot and he lived a peaceful life until he died, drowned on the same place the child died, exactly half century after that.
Nowadays the dolls are still there, rotten, old, dirty, with spiders making there their nests, dead rats inside, snakes and even cockroaches, looking like little hanged bodies in the trees. Really one of the scariest places on earth, especially for people like me that have a huge fear of old dolls. Well, I think I couldn't come here. Could you?
How to visit:
It is not particularly easy to reach the island. The best bet is to take a ferry from Embarcadero Cuemanco or
from Embarcadero Fernando Celada. The duration of the trip will vary depending on what boat
you take. The trip might be around 3-4 hours if you wish to visit the
canals as well, so make sure you have enough time to properly visit the
island and the beautiful surrounding canals. If you take a trajinera directly to the island, the trip shouldn’t last a lot more than two
hours depending on your departure point, but the major boats do not have the Isla de las
Munecas on their itinerary and you will need to ask specifically for a boat
that will stop there.
The island is not very crowded during weekdays but the
canals can get a bit overcrowded during the weekends. You will also find a
small bar on the island. The price of a boat trip is calculated on an hourly
rate and it is around maybe 100€ but... if you share it will many people your wallet will be fine.
