The Giant’s Causeway is well known in Northern Ireland for its polygonal columns of layered basalt, being the only World Heritage Site in Northern Ireland.

The unique look of the causeway was formed by volcanic activity 60 million years ago: The basalt lava through the chalk beds and the subsequent cooling formed these pillars.

Or, you could choose to believe the more interesting tale... The legend says the causeway was built by the Irish giant Finn MacCool. When challenged by the Scottish giant Benandonner, Finn built the causeway as a bridge to join Ireland and Scotland. After Finn outwitted Benandonner, Benandonner fled back to Scotland, destroying the causeway so Finn could not follow. Actually, there are more basalt rock columns in Scotland to support this legend... well, who knows! It's a geological formation that you cannot find in many places in the world, and the tale just gives it the right magic to be on the bucket list.

How to visit:
There's no entrance fee to see the causeway, just to go to the visitor's center (like a... museum of the place, not sure if it's worthy). If you are in Ireland or Northern Ireland for a few days, you might want to stay up in Bushmills/ Ballycastle for a night. That way you can go to the Giant’s Causeway early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid the crowd. Most tourists start their tours from Belfast or from Dublin, so between 11am and 3pm would be the busiest time of the day.

Other tip: take the red trail insted of the normal trail   there is actually a trail where you can see the Causeway from the mountain top. It is a much nicer view. And after taking a few gorgeous pictures from the top, you just walk down the stairs to see the actual Causeway. Leaving the Causeway, you can just follow the usual/ more popular route back up to the tunnel.

If you don't want to plan it alone, just choose a tour, there are plenty of them starting in Belfast or in other ireland city:

Rabbie's tour offers a menu of tours to discover Scotland, England,  Ireland and other parts of Europe, with the lenght of one day, up to many more, depending on your interests and departure city.
I choose the Loch Ness, Glencoe & the Hightlands tour for a first contact with the Scottish nature and would not be more glad to do it! We left Edinburgh with two funny and knowledge guides and stopped in a little town called Callander for a traditional pie (chicken, meat, many options). Then, in Glencoe, we learned about the bloody past of the people in the region, their costumes, languages and culture, as we stopped in some landmarks such as Loch Lomond, Trossachs National Park and Great Glen Valley.
Finally, we headed to the Loch Ness, one of the deepest and most well known lakes in the history of Europe, where we had around one hour and a half here. Here there are many things to do: search for the monster on a relaxing boat cruise (optional - you have to purchase it), wander around the shores of the loch at your own pace, and grab lunch in a traditional house. I had a soup that tasted like heaven!

On the way backwe went to other important landmarks and stopped in a local farm where we could get some products you can't find anywhere else and where we could feed cute hairy cows, the national scottish animal!!

For me, as a broke backpacker, hostels are my first choice of accomodation, but sometimes it's difficult to find one that has a good price and it's not uncomfortable. Well, St Christopher's inn is a great choice! I stayed in a woman 4 dorm bed, with continental breakfast included (which had expresso included guys, EXPRESSO!! How good is it ahah?).

The hostel is very clean, with a beautiful hall, and located in the middle of everything, just take left for the castle part and right for the new town (I only walked in Edinburgh, no need to catch the buses if you're staying here). The breakfast place is also a restaurant/bar and sometimes it has parties to go (like one I saw on valentine's day).

Accomodation type: Hostel
Location: Edinburgh and many European cities
Medium price p/ night: 18€
