Perito Moreno Glacier - Argentina
Argentina is a land of many colors, and blue glowing ice is one of them. Perito Moreno is Patagonia's most well known glacier, located in Los Glaciares National Park, and the nearest town is El Calafate (a small town, right on Lago Argentino, the largest freshwater lake in the country). What makes Perito Moreno one of the most interesting glaciers in South
America is how active it is. Immense ice chunks constantly crack off the
face, known as ‘calving’, sending huge waves across the lake (maybe every 20 min another piece of ice falls). The glacier is also part of the Southern Patagonian ice field, which is
the third largest frozen body of fresh water in the world. There are a
few places where you can see the ice field from trails in Patagonia,
including Torres del Paine, the Huemul Circuit in El Chaltén, and the boardwalk across from the Perito Moreno glacier.
How to visit:
From the city, you can take a bus for 20$ return tickets for 1h30 ride each way (if you're not alone, maybe try to see what's the price for a car rental?) and 17.50$ for the entrance in the National Park (I read you can only pay with money so please be prepared). I suggest you get there really early to avoid many tourists in your pictures, since it's the most famous glacier in the world.
You can go to El Calafate by plain and bus from Puerto Natales (6 hours), from El Chalten (3 hours), or from
San Carlos de Bariloche (24 hours).
You can do it yourself, go on a tour, or trek the glacier! After my experience in Iceland I would definitly choose the last one, I need to feel crampons in my feet again ahah!
